As the student population grew, MU was challenged to modernize and expand its student housing offerings. For this, the University selected IAA for a collaborative design/build arrangement with KCI Construction. Our team designed the renovation, and oversaw construction, of two existing residence halls, Defoe & Graham, as well as a new connector building between the two. The updated halls provide 309 student beds, and also house the offices of the Department of Residential Life.
Defoe and Graham Halls received completely new finishes within, including new walls, doors, ceiling and flooring. Bathrooms were completely redesigned, and where possible, historical elements were restored and maintained to preserve the unique character of the halls. The spaces are now bright, clean, modern, handicap accessible and easily maintained. In order to enhance functionality and user comfort, elevators were installed at both ends of the buildings. Lastly, the Department of Residential Life offices are now housed here, and provide a contemporary work space for staff and student volunteers.
