Neff Hall at the University of Missouri

Historic Preservation, Exterior Renovation

challenge

Neff Hall, the first building made specifically for the School of Journalism at the University of Missouri, was built in 1920. The university needed to replace the existing wood hung windows with energy-efficient ones, as well as restore the exterior’s historic, red brick masonry. The university commissioned IAA to implement these modern updates while remaining faithful to the original design of Neff Hall.

design solution

IAA has a deep understanding of balancing modern updates with historic preservation. As such, IAA replaced all operable wood hung windows with thermally broken, insulated glazing aluminum windows. Based on the occupancy of the room that the window served, the new windows were either operable or converted to fixed windows to maintain the hung appearance, keeping the charming historic exterior alive.

Additionally, the exterior was restored using historic tuckpointing of mortar joints, replacement of steel lintels over windows, limestone trim repairs, and replacement of the exterior stone steps. Neff Hall stands revitalized, ensuring it will be a center for education and inspiration for years to come.
