Existing coffee options within Memorial Union struggled to meet the expectations of modern campus patrons. In a collaborative effort between Kansas City-based Roasterie and the University of Kansas, an ideal retail space was chosen for a new coffeehouse experience. The existing tired, nondescript coffee bar required enhanced functionality and a complete aesthetic update, but with only a minimal construction budget and schedule, requiring creative and resourceful solutions.
Our team crafted a bold, boutique-café experience with the Roasterie at the Union. Although many of the finishes are modest in nature, they are complemented by energized and rich accents, creating maximum impact. Wherever possible, existing elements were adapted and reused in order to minimize waste and enhance efficiency. Now, students enjoy a a 'can't miss' coffeehouse oasis to stop by on the way to class, or where they can catch up with friends between lectures.
