Missouri State Museum at the Missouri State Capitol

Historic Preservation | Renovation

challenge

The Missouri State Museum, housed within the historic State Capitol Building, has showcased Missouri’s history and natural resources since the 1920s. The revitalization of the Missouri State Museum must balance contemporary intervention with the preservation of the historic State Capitol. Strict guidelines prohibit permanently attaching new elements to the existing architecture, requiring all interventions to remain independent. The design must also accommodate flexible use, including special events where the Main Halls will need to be cleared for overflow seating. At the same time, the museum seeks a distinct identity that differentiates it from the Capitol’s rectilinear symmetry while remaining respectful of its historic context.

design solution

Our design introduces a system of curvilinear, river-inspired platforms that will carve fluid pathways through the museum, referencing the Missouri and Mississippi Rivers. Warm brass materiality will echo the Capitol’s bronze detailing and Missouri’s limestone formations, establishing a complementary yet distinct visual language. All exhibit elements are conceived as independent, self-supporting millwork pieces—robust yet fully movable. Platforms on casters, rotating fixtures, and modular components will allow for efficient reconfiguration and storage. This flexible approach will support immersive storytelling while preserving the integrity of the historic structure and accommodating future programmatic needs.
