Fire Department Vehicle Maintenance Facility

Renovation

challenge

IAA was commissioned by the Unified Government (UG) of Wyandotte County and Kansas City, Kansas to fully renovate and retrofit an existing 32,000+ sf prefabricated metal structure to house the WYCO/KCK Fire Department Vehicle Fleet Maintenance Facility. The previous building tenant was a steel fabrication company and the existing structure did not meet any current Energy and Life Safety code requirements.

design solution

IAA brought the existing facility up to code by fully insulating and weatherproofing the building envelope including new insulated overhead doors. New infrastructure including fire sprinkler protection, LED light fixture, and energy efficient heating and cooling systems were also provided. The existing glass structure at the entrance of the facility was renovated to include new offices, as well as a conference room and breakroom for the Fire Department. A new locker room and restroom addition was constructed adjacent the vehicle maintenance bay for the Fire Department to have quick access for cleaning and sanitation. Multiple systems were introduced to the facility to address vehicle maintenance needs. A 50 foot long vehicle inspection pit was recessed into the existing slab, and 5 adjustable vehicle exhaust arms were placed throughout the maintenance bay to provide a path for exhaust to leave the building while vehicles are running. Other systems include, but are not limited to, a radiant heat system in the maintenance bays, floor drainage plumbing including a grease interceptor, and a double compressed air loop system.
