Following the complete restoration and renovation of two storied residence halls was the redesign of the courtyard connecting them. Years of neglect resulted in a desolate and under performing outdoor space. Our team was essentially presented with a clean slate, ready to be transformed with new landscaping, dynamic lighting, and custom architectural features. Situated near the center of campus, community engagement was key.
The new courtyard integrates both buildings into a shared community space. After renovations, the courtyard is now a heavily-trafficked landscape, providing channels for both pedestrian, as well as bicycle flow. Besides functionality, our team recognized opportunities to deliver real moments of impact through custom elements celebrating both the landscape and also school pride. The steel canopy adorning the main entrance of Johnston Hall evokes visions of thick tree branches overhead, casting shadows and providing a serene shaded place of peace and relaxation. The modernity of the elements, mixed with the timelessness of an aesthetic program inspired by nature, strikes a balance. Furthermore, custom steel bike racks make getting around easy for students and also create a sense of place with University logos. Lastly, a patio that is part of Sabai Dining provides a place to take a break and enjoy a meal with friends on a nice day.
