On the Boards: A Look at IAA’s Current Transformative Projects

Currently, our studio is buzzing with transformative projects that span higher education, cultural landmarks, and civic institutions. Here is a look at the projects currently shaping our boards and our region.

Reimagining Higher Education

Our commitment to educational environments has always been about more than classrooms; it is about creating spaces that foster community and future-readiness.

  • Kansas State University – Anderson Hall: We are honored to lead the programming for K-State’s flagship building, Anderson Hall. This collaboration is producing a comprehensive roadmap to revitalize the historic structure, ensuring it remains a beacon of inclusive, student-centered design for generations to come.

  • University of Missouri – Sinclair School of Nursing: Recently completed, this 63,000-square-foot facility stands as a testament to future-focused learning. Featuring advanced simulation labs and collaborative research spaces, the new school elevates the university community and reinforces our belief that design directly impacts educational outcomes.

Cultivating Community & Culture

From the winding rivers of Missouri to the heart of Kansas City, our current cultural projects are designed to ground visitors in discovery and wonder.

  • Kansas City Zoo Education Building: In a “full-circle” moment for IAA—having designed the African Plains Barn in 1994—we have been selected to reimagine and expand the Zoo’s Education Building. This project will enable the Zoo to meet the needs of its growing programs, serving the broader community with a modern, engaging facility.

  • Missouri State Capitol: We are currently designing the renovation of the ground floor of the historic Capitol Building. Using the Missouri and Mississippi rivers as a central design metaphor, we are weaving together interactive narratives to create a state-of-the-art institution that complements the historic architecture while offering a distinct, 21st-century identity.

Art as Architecture: The JewelHouse

Perhaps one of our most unique collaborations is our ongoing partnership with The Museum of Kansas City to realize JewelHouse, a monumental artwork by contemporary artist Summer Wheat.

This project is a pioneering architectural intervention that will restore the historic limestone exterior and copper-and-glass roof while integrating new stained glass and mosaic artworks. Designed as a sanctuary for engagement and reflection, JewelHouse will honor the stories of women—past, present, and future.

Looking Ahead

“These foundational values ground our vision for the future—one that champions inclusivity, design innovation, and celebrating cultural heritage,” says Principal & Director of Design Ava Amirahmadi.

As we move into 2026, IAA remains committed to the atelier-style approach that defines us: collaborative, creative, and deeply invested in the communities we serve.
